Sachin (God) rewrites history. Makes a double century in ODI

The God of Indian Cricket has broken the record for most runs scored in an inng. in ODI...

200* :sunny:

After 40 years of one-day international cricket, Sachin Tendulkar rewrote history by breaking the 200-run barrier on a day when batting records and the South African bowlers took a beating, in Gwalior. When he turned Wayne Parnell to square leg for two in the 46th over, Tendulkar eclipsed Saeed Anwar and Charles Coventry's record for the highest individual score of 194, but his muted reaction on reaching that milestone confirmed that he had his sights set on a bigger accomplishment.

It was that kind of day - the way Tendulkar started gave the impression that he was in the zone. Virender Sehwag perished early, but Dinesh Karthik settled into the support role perfectly. Karthik brought up his personal best, and helped Tendulkar add 194 for the second wicket, before Yusuf Pathan and MS Dhoni played destructive cameos to torment the visitors. Dhoni brought up his 50 off 28 balls with a violent hoick over long off in the penultimate over, with Tendulkar still one run away from the 200, but the special moment came in the final over of the innings from Charl Langeveldt.

"It's a magnificent achievement. Sachin has led by example and that all Indians are proud of his achievement," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said.

"We all are proud of Sachin, who played a marvellous inning today against South Africa. Further, we are confident that he will continue to make world records. His innings will be remembered for all time to come," Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit said.

"For any cricketer he is the perfect role model. The great thing about him is that he has been outstanding in both Tests and ODIs. As a Pakistani player, I know how much value we have always put on his wicket," right-handed batsman Shoaib Malik said.

"Records are there to be broken but it makes you happy when someone like Tendulkar does it. I think he thoroughly deserves this record and many more in days to come," Javed Miandad said

Factbox on Sachin Tendulkar

India's Sachin Tendulkar became the first batsman to score 200 runs in one-day internationals on Wednesday in the second ODI against South Africa in Gwalior, India.

The 36-year-old former India captain earlier in the day broke the world record for the highest individual score of 194 by Pakistan's Saeed Anwar and Zimbabwe's Charles Coventry on his way to 200 not out off 147 balls with 25 fours and three sixes.

Here are six facts about one of the all-time greatest batsmen and the face of Indian cricket for over two decades.

* A teenage prodigy, Tendulkar was born on April 24, 1973 in Mumbai and made his Test debut against Pakistan as a curly-haired 16-year-old, becoming the youngest Indian Test player. A year later, he hit his maiden Test hundred in England.

* Tendulkar holds a number of batting records, including the aggregate one-day runs (17,598) and centuries (46). He also holds the record for most Test hundreds (47).

* He had two unsuccessful terms as India captain, the first aged 23 in 1996 before being axed 17 months later after his batting suffered. He was reappointed in 1999, but stood down after a 3-0 Test series rout in Australia the following year.

* Tendulkar was named player of the 2003 World Cup, scoring a record 673 runs to help India reach the final, where they lost to Australia. The next year, he equalled compatriot Sunil Gavaskar's world record of 34 Test hundreds while compiling 248 not out, his highest score, in Australia.

* Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1997.

* Surpassed West Indies' Brian Lara as the highest Test run-scorer in 2008. Lara had scored 11,953 runs before he retired from international cricket in 2007. Tendulkar has scored 13,447 Test runs.

Matt Hayden:
"I have seen God, he bats at no. 4 for India"

Peter Roebuck
"On a train from Shimla to Delhi, there was a halt in one of the stations. The train stopped by for few minutes as usual. Sachin was nearing century, batting on 98. The passengers, railway officials, everyone on the train waited for Sachin to complete the century. This Genius can stop time in India!!"

Dennis Lillee
If I've to bowl to Sachin, I'll bowl with my helmet on. He hits the ball so hard.

Glenn McGrath
I still think Tendulkar is the best batsmen in the world ahead of Steve Waugh and Lara.

Brain Lara
Sachin is a genius. I'm a mere mortal.

Sir Don Bradman
I saw him playing on television and was struck by his technique, so I asked my wife to come look at him. Now I never saw myself play, but I feel that this player is playing much the same as I used to play, and she looked at him on Television and said yes, there is a similarity between the two...hi compactness, technique, stroke production... it all seemed to gel! in reference to Sachin Tendulkar.

Andy Flower:
"There are 2 kind of batsmen in the world. One Sachin Tendulkar. Two all the others."

Allan Donald:
"Sachin Tendulkar has often reminded me of a veteran army colonel who has
many medals on his chest to show how he has conquered bowlers all over the
world"

Sunil Gavaskar
India's fortune will depend on how many runs the little champion scores. There is no doubt Tendulkar is the real thing.

Richie Benaud
He has defined cricket in his fabulous, impeccable manner. He is to batting what Shane Warne is to bowling.

Geoffrey Boycott
Technically, you can't fault Sachin. Seam or spin, fast or slow nothing is a problem.

Greg Chappell
He is a perfectly balanced batsman and knows perfectly well when to attack and when to play defensive cricket. He has developed the ability to treat bowlers all over the world with contempt and can destroy any attack with utmost ease.

Shane Warne
I'll be going to bed having nightmares of Sachin just running down the wicket and belting me back over the head for six. He was unstoppable. I don't think anyone, apart from Don Bradman, is in the same class as Sachin Tendulkar. He is just an amazing player.

Viv Richards on Sachin Tendulkar
I think he is marvellous. I think he will fit in whatever category of Cricket that has been played or will be played, from the first ball that has ever been bowled to the last ball that's going to be. He can play in any era and at any level. I would say he's 99.5% perfect.

BBC Sports, on Sachin Tendulkar
Beneath the helmet, under that unruly curly hair, inside the cranium, there is something we don't know, something beyond scientific measure. Something that allows him to soar, to roam a territory of sport that, forget us, even those who are gifted enough to play alongside him cannot even fathom. When he goes out to bat, people switch on their television sets and switch off their lives.

Navjot Singh Sidhu:
"India me aap Prime Minister ko ek Baar Katghare me khada kar sakte hain..Par Sachin
Tendulkar par Ungli nahi utha Sakte.."

Barry Richards
Sachin is cricket's God!

Ian Chappell
Harder he works, the luckier he gets.

Anil Kumble
"I am fortunate that I've to bowl at him only in the nets!"

Andrew Symonds
"To Sachin, the man we all want to be"
What Symonds wrote on an aussie t-shirt he autographed specially for Sachin.

Mark Taylor:
"We did not lose to a team called India...we lost to a man called Sachin" -Mark Taylor, during the test match in Chennai (1997)

Tendulkar better than Bradman: Hussain

Former England captain Nasser Hussain is convinced that Sachin Tendulkar is the greatest batsman the game has ever seen, better than even the iconic Don Bradman.

"I have never liked comparisons between great players, but after Wednesday's incredible game it must be said -- Sachin Tendulkar is the greatest batsman of all time," Hussain wrote in his column for 'The Daily Mail'.

Tendulkar became the first batsman to crack a double century in the four-decade-long history of One-day cricket against South Africa on Wednesday and Hussain felt that should settle the debate on who is the greatest batsman ever.

"Better than Brian Lara and Ricky Ponting, the other two great players of my era. Better than Sir Viv Richards, Sunil Gavaskar and Allan Border. And I would even say better than Sir Don Bradman himself," wrote the Chennai-born English cricketer of Indian origin.

Hussain said Tendulkar has somehow managed to retain his early enthusiasm even after two decades of international cricket which he found incredible.

"I played against Tendulkar on my first England tour, the Nehru Cup in India in 1989, and I could still see that excited boy in big pads in Gwalior," said Hussain, who once resorted to negative tactics and asked spinner Ashley Giles to bowl way outside off-stumps to curb the Indian," he said.

"That extraordinary drive and enthusiasm are what make Tendulkar so special. He has been playing international cricket for 20 years under the intense scrutiny being an Indian superstar brings, so it is remarkable he still loves holding a bat as much as ever," Hussain said.

Looking at Tendulkar's illustrious career, Hussain said guiding the Indian team to 2011 World Cup victory with his broad bat would perhaps give a sense of fulfilment.

"What else is left for Tendulkar now? Well, it is sometimes said that he has not played enough match-winning innings on the really big occasion for India.

"What better, then, than to score a hundred in the World Cup final against Australia -- or maybe even England -- on home soil this time next year," he said.

"That would be the full stop that would enable Tendulkar to ride off into the sunset with everything achieved in his career," said the Englishman.

Doffing his hat to Tendulkar and referring to maverick soccer coach Jose Maurinho's famous moniker, Hussain said, "My admiration for him is total. To steal the nickname of a certain football coach who led Inter Milan against Chelsea on Wednesday, Sachin Tendulkar truly is The Special One."
